People Who Help Us
Our new topic in P1 is ‘People who help us’.
We have had lots of fun in the role play area dressing up and taking on the roles of doctors and nurses in a hospital. We have loved learning all about how doctors and nurses can help look after us when we are sick or hurt. We have also learnt lots of new vocabulary; stethoscope, syringe, injection, X-ray, bandage, thermometer. Nurse Katie came to visit us in school. We learnt about how she helps people get better when they are sick or hurt. She showed us lots of equipment and practised bandaging our teddies.
As we have been talking a lot about germs, today we completed a germ experiment to show us the importance of washing our hands. To complete the experiment we used water, pepper, and soap. The pepper represented the germs. When we put soap on our hands it caused the germs to scatter however, when we didn’t use soap, the germs stuck to our fingers!
We have been looking at pictures of X-Rays using the light box. In the Creative Area, we made handprint x-rays crafts using black paper, chalk, and earbuds. The earbuds represented the bones in our skeleton. We also had lots of fun creating paintings using a doctor’s syringe. These paintings were inspired by the artist Jackson Pollock.
At the dough table we also created faces and used craft materials such as buttons, straws, and gems to decorate. We also developed our fine motor skills by making a medical symbol using peg boards.
In the water area, we explored a range of medical equipment such as syringes, pipettes and measuring cylinders to transfer and compare the amount of water between the containers. We also developed numbers within 10 by matching the correct number of Numicon and cubes to the number.
Lot of fun, motivating and engaging play-based learning experiences in P1!
